How Much Does “Free” Really Cost? – Tiara Teamster Journey

My First Team Experience

I wanted a team from any team! And as luck would have it, I was offered a free team. But how much does “free” actually cost?

That was my very first lesson on my Tiara Teamster journey.

I was given two lovely ponies. The offer came from a place of pure kindness, and I am still grateful for the intent. But as it turns out, “free” can be expensive in its own way. In my case, it cost me something incredibly valuable: time and enjoyment.

I spent a full year working with these ponies, including consulting with a trainer to guide us through the process. I was able to halter the gelding, but the mare remained completely untouchable even after all that time. My husband and I spent time with them every day, trying to build trust, yet the moment I reached out to touch the mare, she would flee—oats or no oats.

Her flight response was extremely intense and, at times, genuinely dangerous. She had never been abused or mistreated; this was simply her nature. Both ponies need someone with more expertise than I could offer.

Lessons Learned

I fully understand that in someone else’s hands, the outcome might have been different. But that was part of my learning experience—discovering what I want to do with a team and understanding my own strengths and abilities.

I did gain, though this year, some valuable lessons.

I learned what I truly wanted in a team! A younger, manageable in size and personality pair. A team that was already trained and ready to be driven. A team I could confidently take to the mountains and do some logging, once we have gotten used to each other and I have developed my skill level and confidence. Finally a team capable of keeping up with the big drafts.

I also learned something about myself—I’m not a trainer and I have been exposed to some amazing horses. And I don’t have the time or desire to become a trainer. What I do want is to drive, explore, and enjoy the journey.

Moving Forward with Clarity

After a year with the ponies (and yes, I genuinely enjoyed my time with them), we decided to return them to their owners as originally agreed. And despite being a feral team, they stepped right onto the trailer and headed back to their 50+ acres and their herd—like they never left. Which made me happy.

So, what did “free” cost me?
Time! Missed driving opportunities. Fun outings with friends. However, it also gave me clarity about what I do want.

A New Beginning: Ted and Loki

Proudly - I am the owner/friend to two six-year-old Fjord geldings—Ted and Loki.

I am excited for everything ahead of us. We’re ready to start our relationship, our adventures, and yes, our challenges too.

My next step?
Start driving them........ and figuring out just what this amazing team and I are going to do next. Stay tuned.
