ACS Horse Blanket Buyer’s Guide
Think of your horse’s blankets like your own jackets.
You don’t have one coat for every kind of Alberta weather—and your horse shouldn’t either.

600D or 1200D?
600 Denier
✓ Good everyday outer shell
✓ Lighter and economical
✓ Good for horses that are easy on blankets
1200 Denier
✓ Heavier, tougher outer shell
✓ Better for group turnout and rougher horses
✓ Worth considering if your horse is hard on blankets
Remember: Denier tells you about the strength of the outer fabric. It does not tell you how warm the blanket is. Fill determines warmth.
What Should I Own?
For Alberta conditions, a useful blanket wardrobe is:
1. Turnout Sheet — 0g
For rain, wind and mild fall or spring weather.
2. Light or Medium Blanket — 100–200g
For those colder fall days and changing temperatures.
3. Heavy Winter Blanket — 300–400g
For genuinely cold winter weather when your horse needs the additional insulation.
Which Blanket Does My Horse Need?
There isn't one temperature chart that works for every horse. Consider:
Coat — Natural winter coat or clipped?
Age — Young, mature or senior?
Body Condition — Easy keeper or hard keeper?
Shelter — Barn, windbreak or exposed turnout?
Weather — Dry cold or wet and windy?
Activity — Standing around or moving regularly?
September Blanket Check
☐ Pull last year’s blankets out of storage
☐ Check fit before the weather turns cold
☐ Inspect straps, buckles and stitching
☐ Look for tears or damaged waterproof fabric
☐ Make sure you have the right weights
☐ Replace missing or worn-out blankets before the first cold snap
BUY EARLY
The most popular sizes and weights are often the first to disappear once cold weather arrives.
Buy your horse’s blankets the same way you buy your own jackets: have the right ones in the closet before you need them.
